Your pet will stay in the world if left there unsupervised, and will fast start losing loyalty points if you are logged out, full lp will let your pet stay loyal for about an hour before it wanders off. (After todays patch)
If you want to save your pet, then use a stable. It will stay in the stables untill you claim it, it does charge a small fee if you do not own the stable, or use a guild stable.
