Ok...
One of my biggest beefs with MMO's in general. They make you customize your character first, then name it... This is completely bass ackwards. You should be able to LOCK IN YOUR CHARACTER NAME, then take the time to make your character look how you want it. Otherwise you have to choose between a stupid looking character, or a stupid retard name. |

I'd have to agree with Phoenix, I've played a few games before where I delete an old character, then go in to make a character of the same name, spending my time customizing it, then have the name taken away from me... Lock the name first, THEN let's start the customization.

Mr/Miss.Community Moderator, I dont think their talking about whos going to be first but losing a name when recreating a char. and I agree with them. Its a good idea to beable to lock a name for 10 or so min to create a look you like and have a name you like aswell...Theres not many things worse then having your name snatched cause you wanted you char. to look the way you want it.

What I am trying to say is that most every MMO out there COMBINES the character customization screen and the name selection screen.
This should not be the case. When the two are joined, you risk losing your name DURING THE TIME it takes to make your character appear the way you wish. Example: You want the name Jim Bob. You also care about how Jim Bob will look. So, even if you log in the VERY SECOND the servers go online the first time, if you choose to invest 3 minutes into your appearance, someone who doesn't care about the way they look only puts in 12 seconds of character customization, and the name Jim Bob. So, when you choose "Make Character", the server replies... "That name already taken. Pick another!", because the server gave the name to 12-second boy, as he was first to both "customize" (by hitting random) and name his character. What should happen is that you first choose the name, then the server makes sure that it is available, locks it for you, and then you go to the customization screen. That way, you get first-come-first-serve on names, and still have time to make your character unique. Last edited by Phoenixphire : 2nd May 2008 at 12:53. |

There is less of a time difference if you both start with the name then when you spend those 3 minutes to optimize the appearance first
by naming the character first, you only compete in writing speed, otherwise you also compete in avatar customization speed, which is by default faster if one does not care about it at all. Unless you have a freak occurrence where you actually like the character that is first presented to you :P |

On-topic, it would be good if u got to choose the name first, cuz if any other than Santa (me) took the name Santa, I'd go on strike and noone would get any presents at christmas! |

We can't let Santa go on strike! That, and I don't see how much of a difference this would make in the actual code of the game.

question... why do names have to be unique in the first place? usually within a culture you have many people with the same names.
what i would like to have, is to be able to lock down specific looks: if there are enough sliders, then you could remove certain combinations from them almost invisible: let's say you picked a certain face which is almost identical to someone else. all you have now to adjust is your nose length... it will jump on the exact nose lengh that is already taken. you wouldn't even feel it: instead of the variable going from 3.462 to 3.463, it would jump to 3.464. yes you can create almost an identical twin, but people will tell the difference if they look your at your character right at the face. and that's what make people recognizable as individuals regardless of names.

The thing that I hate is when the devs put in the name that I use for my guys name. So it is locked out when I get the game no matter what.
Or some wannabe takes my name, so it would be nice if the people that are on the forums for say like 5 months before the game comes out get a specail program that they can lock their names in before the game even comes out. |

I don't see this as a big issue but I can see how someone really wants a name. Thing is, there's always the chance that someone else will get that name before you, regardless of the order in which you try to enter it.
However, if the game allowed me to enter and validate a name before I customize my avatar, I would be ok with it. |

Ah auutumn I don't think you have been in Gaming long enough to make a name for yourself.
As i have a bit of a following with my other user name s7092910. Quite a bit of people start their names with s7, and then do some random numbers, or something like that. And I can usually never be able to use Landor, I usually have to change it to laydor if I can get that name soon enough. |

press "edit" on anyone of your posts. you will see a "delete" option on your left, just between "go advanced" & "cancel".

I agree with auutumn on the part where, no matter in which order the name gets locked, if someone beat you too it, there's no turning back. But i do disagree on it not being a big issue, because let's face it...everyone wants a cool sounding/looking name, right?
But i think it would be a nice change. Definitely not like all the others! |

I do not struggle with this problem, since I have had like 15 different nicknames through my internet supreme reign, and if one is taken - I hit another one. I even made up a new one yesterday: Sienchan. Oh, I suppose it isn't hard to add the new name function first.

FMPOV, there's no need to reserve names. If all the popular ones would be taken, it'll encourage people to make up unique ones
Yes, i know that the majority will just make some crappy variations putting numbers instead of letters and stuff, but if somebody will take it as opportunity - it will be enough |

ok, does anybody here has the unique and only first name of it's kind in your respective culture? i know i don't, my real name is common in Israel, and in the middle east for semitic cultures in general...
the only reason to have unique names we had in the past, is because we had very limited character customization options and we couldn't have unique looks.... why not fix that instead?
