#2 would be sweet, but you would need means of being able to take them down so they can't just camp in a tree forever and kill you ever time you try to climb up to get at them (of course this is more like melee on ground vs. ranged in the tree). Perhaps being able to smack the tree with your weapon and knock them down or actually cutting the tree down (which really should be possible anyways if you are to harvest wood for the crafting system).
