Thumbs up Challenge to the MO community

With the knowledge that SV and friends have decided to donate the proceeds of the Life-time Special Edition auction to Doctors Without Borders/MSF I come to you all making a challenge.

You see it is a tradition in my family since before I was born to make donations instead of buying presents for Birthdays and Christmas, so SV's charity effort in this time of financial insecurity for the company has inspired me to do the same. So I will be matching the cost of the game purchase and first subscription fee in a donation to Doctors Without Borders as sort of a celebration for the release/birthday of Mortal Online and as a thank you for bringing back the foundations of the MMO genre.

Thus is my challenge to all of you.

Buy Mortal Online, get a subscription and match the costs in a donation to a charity of your choice.

There is many reasons for doing this, for one it will save lives in countries that could not be saved otherwise..
I don't need to go into all of the reasons but, please do this and show SV that their effort in making this game while being ethical is equally important to you as well. SV deserves success, just as the people you would be saving with your donations deserve healthy lives.

Thank you for reading, hope to see you all in game.

Oh haha no I didn't mean the cost of the auction just the standard retail + sub, I'm not rich lol!

If many people do the same though it could match the auction, that would be something everyone could be proud of.

Hmm how about making somekind of like MO community donation fund? (I think paypal has this)
Everybody aports what he can be it 50 cents or 100USD and by time of launch of the game we donate the money in the fund to some charity organization?

I love the sentiments from you, Seabhac.

But I think the suggestion from Adrala might be even more impactful. After all, if not only the developers, but the players themselves were a positive and charity-minded community - imagine how much more respected we would be than... ahem... wow players.

I mean, might even warrant small media attention. Should even do the same charity - show that we have our developer's backs just like they have ours, you know?

I'm sure Doctors Without Borders would be impressed with us, at least.

But in order to inspire confidence in donating parties, the paypal account should be managed by SV, of course.

I fully agree with the idea, especially the part about SV setting up the paypal account. You can be sure I would never want to!

It would also allow people interested a choice of exactly how much to donate, though to be honest. People can take this onto themselves and make the same type of transaction directly to MSF or what ever charity they like.

Neither can I hah, was just saying retail price plus first subscription cycle of six months or whatever.

The thing is, if we do it through an SV account, everyone will know that it was a community effort. Donating by yourself, while still making you feel good, doesn't get the community recognition.... not that we should be donating to get a pat on the back.

I am in too !
I already do a donation each month anyways, it won t change anything for me.
I am glad to see this post btw, i could also help with making a webpage for it, let me know if needed.

Edit : Just a quick "anecdote" : if each company in the world would give 10 % of the amount they spend in advertising, it would be enough to give everyone something to eat in this world.

I sense sarcasm? I hope?

But if not:

Nah. They're laden with religion-logic (oxymoron), their thing about helping aetheists and agnostics is even full of "higher power" jargon - and to top it off they're kind of a goofy charity at that.

At least Doctors Without Borders helps people who don't have the monetary ability to help themselves - plus... um... SCIENCE!

Because medicine is science.

and,

Good job Seabhac, inspiring post.

I really like the idea of SV managed paypal fund. It will show just how great of a community we truly are. God forbid, it might inspire other organizations/companies to do the same.

Can we get an official response on this matter. I think making a donation as a community far outweights the individual donations to the charity in terms of building a better community here and inspiring other communities to do the same.

Thank you for the encouragement everyone, really appreciate the responses. Since you all have spoken in wisdom I am in agreement that a paypal account would give a public reference and single solution to what this represents.

A request has been sent to Mats asking if there could be a paypal account set up by Star Vault, for the purpose of donating money to Doctors Without Borders as joint community effort in charity & celebration of MO's release. This is not a small thing to ask a company who is already trying to set up their show of shows but it felt like the right thing to do.

I love how people think this is a great idea because they could be respected, or be looked at as "good". For Christ's sake, just do it because it could help someone, not because people will think better of you.

Funny you should mention that as I was originally just going to donate until it occurred to me that there might be a greater impact possible if the idea to do the same was brought to other MO community forum members.

Honestly I can't really imagine someone here helping just to look good, since we are all speaking in a totally anonymous environment and nobody really knows one another. Though I do agree people should do things to help people and not just to look good doing it, just think about how much more people can be helped through many people donating.

It really isn't about people's reputation or looking good, you need to look at the bigger picture. Community picture. After all, nobody is going to say, "oh yeah, Melkorus donated $400, such a nice guy", nobody will know. However, our COMMUNITY as a whole could even be inspiring to other communities out there.

With all the political natzies that have a hard on against 'violent' games, and MO falls under that game category, this charity fund project would represent the 'other' side of this community. I'm sure there are people out there that think Starvault is bunch of 'no-morals-shitheads' and that our community is full of degenerate psychos that enjoy violence and don't care about the well being of the world. This is one way to prove them wrong. While the opinion of such people might not matter much to us, they do matter to Starvault, and in turn Starvault's well-being matters to us. Don't underestimate the power of the perception from the outside world. This charity project can shift that perception in our favor, as a community.

I donate to all your mom's every night.

But seriously:

Who gives a crap about charity? The only reason to give to one would be to get a tax break and even then its not worth it.

I would rather burn my money than give to a charity.

I think an MO charity fund would be a great idea! I don't have the money to be able to donate 50 dollars after I buy the game, but I can donate a few dollars =) It would be great to see a community really come together like that!

And here I was thinking "what the fuck is their problem", refering to all the anti-violent-games propaganda bastards out there, but now I see that people like you give them enough fuel to continue their campaigns against games such as Mortal Online. You indeed do sound like degenerate piece of shit psycho that has no morals and no good will towards the world. Unfortunately it only takes guy or two to do something stupid and then we are all labled the same.

Charity fund would prove that our community is not full of douchebags such as yourself.

How about donating to the following charity? It works and does a lot of good in rural Bangladesh - I know as I have been there 4-5 times over the last 17 years, and my mother has been helping them for about 33 years.

Either way, great idea - I am in for donating whatever choice is made.
