It's great to see a web page irc option as well for those whose aren't familiar with irc clients.

irc basics:

1st: get a client (www.mirc.com for example, the "most" used, there are several others out there -> use your favorite web search)

2nd: set it up

server itself: irc.privnet.org
the port to use: 6667 (standard), 6697 if using ssl (mostly for the irc ops ...)

3rd: connect -> just hit the connect button somewhere

4th: get a nickname, register it with nickserv and co

/nick enteryournamehere <- for example: /nick OMGPIE will make you appear as OMGPIE, although i recommend not to use CAPS!, looks like <censored>

register it:

/msg nickserv register password email

after registering, your nick is for YOU exclusively, every time you connect to the network, you have to identify yourself now

/msg nickserv identify password

if someone thinks that it is fun to "block" your nick preventing you to use it, just register a second nick ("/nick newname" -> "/msg nickserv register pass email" -> "/msg nickserv ghost youroldname password" <- this will KILL the user and kick him out of the network, setting your old registered nick free to use for you again -> "/nick youroldname")

finally join a channel -> /join #mortalonline ... for example

the "/join", "/msg nickserv identify" stuff and other things can be put in so called "perform" lists, that's a simple batch that will be done automatically if connecting, helpful if you have a lot of channels to join or are too lazy to identify yourself manually every time

Awesome feature to get to know some of the community who can not be on forums while at "work". Unfortunately not many of us are using it currently.

Yeah I am still new to the state as well. Just moved to Winston Salem in December of 07' from New Jersey. I like it a lot so far!
