I came up with this idea while reading threads discussing whether the game should be full loot, whether or not a player revives naked or with some of his equipment, etc.
I think crafters should be able to go to a city's military barracks and complete a crafting "work order." For instance, the crafter would select what he wants to create for the army-- a suit of armor, a set of weapons, other supplies, even food, etc. Once the crafter decides what he wants to make for the military, the military supplies the necessary materials and then pays the crafter compensation for his skills. The armor, weapons, or food created for the army is then stored in the barracks, where players who just revived completely naked can get some equipment before they head back out. Of course, the armor and weapons created by work orders have absolutely no monetary value whatsoever and are significantly weaker when compared to items crafters create on their own. Also, perhaps the better reputation a revived character has with the city/barracks, the more equipment he has available to take. Hopefully a character has some weapons, armor, and gold stored in his bank to re-equip before heading back into combat. But if he is missing a few pieces of armor or finds he is out of gold, I think this system could be really helpful and lets crafters feel as if they're supplying an army. The idea of completing a work order from supplied materials is similar to Vanguard's system. However, in Vanguard, work orders were mainly used to level, and the items created were useless and never seen again. The work order system I just described is not grinding-- the items created have a purpose and the system itself has a purpose, to clothe the naked people! Good idea!
To add another layer of realism: naturally, the City Guard itself is clothed in this gear. Come to mention it, how about the gear being complimentary when you do one shift of Guard duty (8 in-game hours which about equals 40 minutes in my 2 hour = 1 in-game day proposal). Of course, not fulfilling your duties would mark you a deserter leading to a lot more difficulties the next time you wake up naked
