Persistent mounts and pack animals would provide much-needed realism and an interesting mechanic to the game.
Has anyone ever played the Resident Evil games? Deciding what you should carry with you was actually an important part of the game, because items were important and inventory space was limited. I think that limited inventory and realistic carrying restrictions would be a great feature in a sandbox-pvp game because it would necessitate supply chains for resources/food/items. Supply chains for guilds, cities, factions, etc would make PvP very interesting--it would provide real incentives to controlling territory and to capturing enemy goods. What I don't want is people being able to carry 40 stacks of ore in their inventory. If you have that much ore, it should require a cart to move. And if you want to protect that ore, you'll need mercenaries/guards. For this system to work, some resources would need to be limited to certain ranges. For example, a certain type/quality of metal ore should only be available in a few areas in the game. Crafters might be able to do without the ore, but it provides better quality results in some specific items when used as a component.

it would be really interesting to see a guild with it's HQ based on the foot of an ore rich mountain trying to stave of a horde of other guild's. and about the resident evil series i once stayed over half an hour trying to decide to take either the G.launcher with a dozen rounds or the shotgun with around 100 rounds(i went with the shotgun),it would make the game that much hardcore though it would somewhat limit the amount of people venturing out of town, which would make guilds and crafters build small outposts in order to make a nifty profit out of them. If you can't take the heat don't stand in the sun. |

It would be interesting if they decide to implement a weight based/speed for characters. This was actually something I talked about in the early days of AoC...
Different armors affect movement speeds. Lighter armors would allow character to run around faster (leather) and the heavier stuff would decrease your movement speed (plate). You could also compare this to some of the FPS games out there, that alllow you to customise your character before you take to the battlefield. There are problems i see with having speed varience between characters... AKA kiting might be a problem. But if you gave good and FAIR tradeoffs to armor encumbrance, it could be interesting. Getting back to the topic above, it would be interesting if you did in fact have mules to help haul your extra stuff like supplies and ores. =] So if you choose to wear light armors and carrier little gear into the field, you gain speed and agility over defense... If you decide to wear plate armor and take all manner of extra weapons and gear you will be a slower though have greater armor and resistance. |

I picture it like this. I just leave a dungeon with full pockets so I use my mule. But as I pull into town a theif steals my loot so I jump on my horse and follow him until he atops at his hideout where I murder him..

Back in my UO days, i played a thief who had a bag FILLED with protected clothing (that couldn't be looted on death) and a poisoned weapon. I stole from other players, often got caught... but I had the ability to defend myself even though i Lacked armor. I often killed those I stole from when they attacked me. It was the most fun i ever had in MMO honestly. |

Only mules i saw in rpg were those in "Dungeon Siege"
Anyway, mules were very nice detail and also a realistic solution. I vote yes for pack animals. Last edited by Cardinal Harvest : 30th July 2008 at 23:05. |

Killable pack-animals and beasts of burden for the yay!
As well as limited inventory space/weight. I can't tell you how many times I've thought to myself "How big is this damned rucksack!?" while playing MMORPGs as of late. Also, everything in one bag? No. Fifty swords in a single bag? No. Fifty bags on my back? No. I do like the idea of having multiple bags. Each bag has a space/weight capacity, and you have your own weight capacity. I also like the idea of NOT being able to stick my 10' polearm in my little invisible moneypouch. Get what I'm saying?

Beasts of burden...one free with character creation and more bagage as we level up. What about travel speed, they'd be pretty slow huh and not good in a fight...what about looting the poor thing?

What if you were a merchant who has all his stuff packed on the back of his mule, traveling around to sell his merchandise in the villages he passes. Now someone like Joe komes along (every damned time!), kills your mole, loots it, and runns away with your goods. All that within 30 seconds. ... ... If that would happen to me, i would be really thrilled...
So if you make mules kill and lootable you also have to think about what will happen ingame with them. There are always those people who like to runn around, killing every mule they see, G.I.Joe for example. So if it costs alot of money/effort to aquire a mule in the first place, or to get a new one, if the stuff you want the mule to carry is valuable, then mules must be like warhorses and gazelles in one, they must be REALLY hard to kill (run away and also endure really alot of damage for example). If i think about looting a dead mule... That should take some time. (pick all the goods up and put them on the back of your own mule). After all the owner of the mule must be able to defend his goods. Well, in the end i think it should be much easyer to kill the merchant than to kill his mule, and if the merchant is dead... what should happen to the mule carrying his goods then? |

i think he is saying he's going to kill people's mules, use alts to destroy shawk's keep from inside, get a high PK reputation, and make fun of german girls.... in an unspecified order.

Oooh I can imagine one guild escourting a caravan of supplies for their guild city or an outpost or similar and an oposing guild getting word of this and ambushing them on the way and then stealing the captured resources

Killing peoples pack mules will probably have the same consequences as killing the mules owner, meaning if someone (GI Joe) goes around killing mules for laughs then he will be wanted and NPC guards will hate him and yada yada yada.
Although, from the sound of it, it looks like that's what GI Joe is going for. And it would be funny as hell to see a crowded market with lots of pack mules and GI Joe slaughtering one after another mule.
