Let's not forget one of the greatest written fantasy duels of all time (the red viper vs the mountain) was a man of around 6' wielding a spear that was '6 feet of ash + 2 feet of steel' with a shield-- against a guy 7 and a half feet tall using a 2 handed greatsword (occasionally 1 handed).
In situations where one combatant is so much larger than the other there is no other weapon you would realistically have a chance with, you need the length of the spear.
Also whomever mentioned the blowgun, I think that's a cool idea that wouldn't be hard to implement and yet another type of ranged weapon to add some diversity.
