I was thinking... What about player written books or something? Of course there would be limits or standards for books like an amount of pages needed so players of... lesser interest don't write books that only include those pixel pictures things made out of letters and dashes. Perhaps something where you submit your book to a publisher who would be mod who checks the book for length and "credibility" and gets the book back to you within a set amount of time allowing you to copy and "print" out more copies of your book for mass distribution. Of couse NPCs could be implemented to automatically turn away scraps that obviously don't reach the guidelines for writing a book. There would be different criteria for different book types the player can choose from: Fables, Poems, Adventures. Perhaps allow them to be sold at "Bookhalls", Or make them non-profit fluff that would just be put in libraries that could be checked out at the latter. Players could create writing guilds, news couriers, the list goes on and on.
Maybe an added features like putting pictures (screenshots) in said books (which would also have to be mod checked so they aren't just screencaps of walls or some guy's face). Player marked maps would also come in handy: players could mark some places of interest on their personal map and have the map distributed. These ideas, I think, are a little ambitious and would require alot of NPC and/or mod work. Please forgive me if this has been posted already.

Well, it could work, but would have to be player driven. I don't think Star Vault would spend resources into an official publisher, as you mentioned. Just allow people to write books in the first place, and you might see someone starting to speak up for the writers. Taking a per cent of the income whilst being renowned by the readers. A book doesn't have to be long to be interesting, but should be priced thereafter.
Less known people could of course also sell their books, but without going through a quality check it would be less tempting to buy from these. Even if it isn't added, I think this is more the thing that usually hits the forums. Fan literature and RP stories, usually compiled by many together.

i believe writing in books will be in. in the skills and attributes section, there is a writing skill under each language. so i'm assuming you won't be able to read a book unless you understand the language it's written in.

just give it a teen rating but with the disclaimer "game experience may change with online play." problem solved.

But I do think this is a good idea, maybe they could have some NPC's that are publishers that have spell checkers and filters that can get rid of random numbers and symbols. But the books success all has to do with the player and maybe make writing a book cost a good amount of money or resources that way you don't get any stupid books that obviously won't make it in the market. |
