Just one word for you "variety". Seeing the same NPC, Mob, Item over and over and over again can take the fun out of any game. Make sure to spend time at making as many items unique as possible. Diablo had an interesting way of doing this which you might want to have a look at for instance.

And if you come up with a way to avoid the "my backpack is full and I'm 100 miles from home" problem that happens in most MMORPGs with a new char it would be wonderful. Perhaps beeing able to drop stuf and pick it back up again, or burrowing it for retrieval later on?
