Default Variations on classic races

Since my previous thread was locked for no reason I can discern, I will continue my discourse here. As I said before, cliche fantasy races (humans, hobbits, elves, dwarves, orcs) would be an ideal "base" for race selections, but we need not limit ourselves to only those races, as more exotic races can be added as need be.

But rather than making those "core" races identical to their cliche fantasy origins, why not put a unique spin on each?

Mortal Online already has half-orcs, which differ from fantasy half-orcs in that they often suffer from sterility, which appears to be borrowed from real-world biology, which I commend the devs on using.

Humans, for example, could be redone as racists who view themselves as superior to all other races. Elves could be redone as cannibal faeries who live in haunted forests and have no concept of empathy. Hobbits could be redone as a race of annoying warriors who seek to take over the world, but are hampered by their small sizes. And finally, Dwarves could be redone as a race of vicious redneck barbarians who live in the cold, frozen wastes of the south.

if your previous thread was locked, creating another one in its stead probably won't do you much good. it will either just get locked/deleted, and you'll be given an infraction for spamming. oh, and the mods don't seem to like it when you mention games other than MO, so that's probably why your first thread was locked.

the races you mentioned are typical of most MMO's but wouldn't see any harm in having them included. i personally would like to see some completely unique races, as well as a few of the classic ones.

although, i don't see how making dwarves rednecks or humans racist would add much.

while there was no good reason for the previews thread getting locked & i don't approve of the locking, i can however speak for the good affect that it had - this thread is much better done and well-written. so bravo on taking something bad done by others as an opportunity for improvement of your own.

and on to topic yet not completely unrelated to the previews statement, that's exactly what you suggest doing with the classical generic races: taking something bad done by others - the original cliche's - and using them as the basis or better said inspiration to create original and interesting races. and on many levels i like this attitude, especially for storytelling and lore, and i think it would work miracles for a pen & paper roleplaying campaign setting. but i never forget that this is also a computer game, an MMORPG. so i'll ask: how will the newly redesigned and inspired versions of those classical races change not only their lore, but their gameplay mechanics?

on a side note for the discussion as it goes further, while it might not be directly related to your original intentions, i do see in your idea the potential to bridge the classical fantasy races (that MO seems to be bound set on using) with my own gameplay related issues that i have with classical race designs in MMORPGs.
