Spell components
One thing I have noticed in a lot of player driven economies is the absences of spell components. Melee/Bow classes have to contend with arrows and degrading, but often spell componets are over looked. They add more to the economy by addding another way for resource depletion (which is often over looked in player economies) and another way for players to create economic opportunities.
Also if done well the need for regulating spell usage with mana becomes obsolete. Magic users then have to balance carrying number and weight of components with their spell usage. More powerful spells need not only rarer components, but often heavier as well. Want to have enough room to carry loot? being encumbered slows down casting? Mana really isn't much of a limiting factor...you just have to take time out to get more (rest, meditate, drink potion ect), but having to manage your resources would make caster have to be more selective about their casting.
