I am actually an avid fan of the UO Mark/Recall system.. Though I do get annoyed by those NPCs that you speak of in today's MMOs. They take too long to load, and you have to travel so far sometimes to get to them.

The great thing about Mark/Recall is that you can just pick up and go whenever you need to. Of course the real fun is that you have to explore the areas that you mark runes to before you can use them to recall with so you are forced to at some point explore the game but you aren't punished with the redundancy of doing it over and over again throughout the rest of your gaming character's life.

I do understand it's downfalls as well though... Escaping PvP, less use of roads for travel, less player interaction with passerbys, etc.. But removing travel time is a huge benefit for those who do not wish to play for hours in order to get only a few things accomplished. It doesn't take any skill to run from one place to another, therefore it is nothing more than a waste of my time to do it. I wan't challenging gameplay not time sinks.

Anyways, I agree.. No "flightpaths", but I do want some form of fast travel.. Even if it means only to friends or something similar...

There are other similar threads with very good arguments going both ways here:

I believe the idea is to have a local economy/banking system if that's possible. However, I think they are planning on allowing transfers of money between banks but it will require time and significant fees.

WonkoZSane, money sink systems, which yours is, have yet to effectively limit travel in the way you describe in any MMO I've seen (I'm talking 20-30+ here). The system you describe is more or less exactly what's in WOW and every WOW clone. I think maybe the devs should actually do something new. If they want to, you know, actually make something new...
I'm not trying to limit travel... I'm trying to insulate local markets from the effects of instant/fast travel. For example, most countries have some form of tariffs not to limit people from entering the country (In fact they want the tourism dollars.) but to protect the local economy from outside influences. I can't honestly say whether it's a WOW clone or not having never played WOW but I don't really care how the devs implement it. One of the reason there is opposition to instant travel is that there will be destroy local economies. But if that's a concern let's use a realistic system to preserve the local economies.

i see those statements as contradictory.

if mages can instantly teleport you (for a fee or any other reason), then why not NPC mages? in which case what's the point of having an NPC (quest giver) send you to another NPC (local mage)? either way it would mean you get warp travel by talking to NPCs. even if it was a player-only skill, players will bot it and create teleport mule.

what kind of limits to not overdo it would you suggest? limited teleportation locations per mage or limited distance per mage will just mean players will transverse the world using multiply mages. it's like changing flights in the airport or having to change between multiply buses. the affect would be the same. limiting teleportation marks or runes only to places mages have being in the past will simply mean it will take a longer time - probably a couple of weeks after release - before such a teleportation network transverses the entire game world.

whether it's every NPC sending you onto location or sending you to talk to a mage NPC, whether the mages are NPCs or only PCs, whether it's limited in locations/distance/prior-binding, the affect will be exactly the same:

I'm very against getting a free teleport to anywhere in the game world that you'd wish to go. That cuts out so much of the exploring and player interaction... One thing that mark/recall system wasn't great for.

What is most important to me is that I can connect with friends quickly. Any other reason to need fast travel really isn't a good one. I don't wish for the world to feel smaller because of the addition of fast travel, I just wish that I can spend less time doing things that are not fun or that are a waste of time for me such as finding and traveling to friends.

Of course there are issue with friend traveling as well.. Such as pvp ganking, or say you're carrying more items than you have the strength to maneuver with you could simply bring in a friend to help ease your load a bit... I guess the only ideal fix here is to teleport you to the city/location nearest to your friend. Therefore some travel must still take place.

I've also given suggestions that are sort of a half recall/mark system where you can only carry a limited amount of runes (5 or so). This would influence a player to only mark runes for locations that they find it very necessary to travel to.

I also have issue with only allowing those with magery to use a teleport system. I really do not wish to see players spamming "I need a port please can someone do it I'll pay!". And if I happen to have magery myself I don't wish to be bothered by such requests.

My opinion is that sometimes a long point-and-click travel or a long waiting for a boat can really get me bored.
I like explore the world, I'm "9x percent explorer" and "80% socializer", but I like to do it interacting with the world.
10 min doing NOTHING mounted on a flying mount on a route you are already familiarized is sad. -.-
But I like the idea of distant places where you find strong and rare monsters and forgotten treasures.
