Have a race that as it matures can turn and morph itself into a full size dragon like most half-dragons normally get the ability to do so after some time. this would be a cool addition I think.

a half dragon race would be interesting, but being able to transform into a dragon doesn't sound like a very plausible idea.

Im a first time poster/long time lurker, so hi everybody. Sorry about the long post, it kinda got away from me
Perhaps it could be done similarly to the Rhapsody series of books by Elizabeth Hayden. In those books there is a main character who is part dragon. The way the books describe it is like a split personality. The man is in control, but he always has the dragon beneath the surface trying to get out, making suggestions and demands. The two entities are fighting for control, yet grudgingly willing to share. At one point in the books, the character lets his dragon side have full control, in a fit of rage. He basically fills up with rage and releases the dragon. At this point he became insanely powerful, immune to fire and able to throw fire around at will. The dragon manifested as a mini drake (bigger than a horse, but smaller than a true drake.) which acted like a traditional familiar. This character also had 'dragon sense.' I.e. he had the dragon's ability to sense pretty much everything around him for a large radius. Now, I dont suggest directly copying Hayden's work, but I liked the way she set up the race. Here is how I see her version working in-game: Half dragon would act almost like a primary skill rather than a race. It would have to be earned in some way, like one of your Deva's characters would have needed to defeat a dragon and eat its heart or something. This would either make that character a half-dragon, or let you create a new character that is half dragon. That way, half dragons would be pretty rare, and would still be able to look like whatever base race the ability is applied to, with minor differences to make them stand out a bit. Like maybe more metallic looking hair, or some scales or something... In the abilities/skills tree will be several powerful abilities. In order to balance the strength, maybe you would need to find another half dragon or talk to a full dragon to learn how to use them? Dragon sense would let you make an 'out of body experience,' disengage yourself from where you are and let you wander through a radius based on how developed that skill is. Makes for an excellent scouting tool. Release the dragon. Puts the character into a state of excessive aggression where defensive properties are dropped significantly, but gains several highly powerful aggressive abilities. Like the ability to summon fireballs at will Dragon skin. Would be the usual, offering basic protection from various elements, probably based on what kind of dragon was killed to earn half dragon status. Also a boost to defensive armor. Also, somehow the player would have to deal with constant updates from the dragon. Sometimes relevant, other times not so much. I.e. "there is a delicious looking rabbit over there. Go get it!" or "Some kind of magical sword... in a cave... over there. I want it!" just popping up in a message bar or something. Umm... others too, but I dont want to get too long... |
