Default So... no siege warfare?

i must say, i'm tremendously disappointed with some of the recently released news, particularly with two pieces of info.
Quote:
There will be player housing, but no guild cities like in Age of Conan or Shadowbane.
Quote:
Houses are supposed to be “save spots”, they cannot be attacked/destroyed.

basically, this rules out any form of siege warfare. i was anticipating sieges to be one of the main pvp structures, but clans won't be able to take over cities, and if they just manually build their own cities, they'll be indestructable, so there isn't much point in attacking them.

i personally think this is a grave mistake. not having clan cities takes away a huge portion of gameplay. i don't see what point there will be to having large-scale battles, other than to simply "fight the enemy." but for what..? their gear? maybe i was misled, but i had always believed conquest would drive most of the pvp in MO.

what is everyone else's thoughts on this?

EDIT: added poll

Depending on the flexibility of the house creator; you could potentialy build up entire cities. Though instead of "Seige Warfare" you are going to get "Key Warfare" where each guild tries to steal the other guild's keyes, and then either loot or destroy the opposing factions houses...

Which brings another point, If you steal the "Key" does that make you the owner of the house? And through that making it possible to "Demolish" the owned house?

argh was looking forward to building up cities and takin em from other people... if they are afraid of one guild conquering the entire map... well heres my take:

Game comes with no prebuilt-npc run cities. Very many different areas around the map are useful possible city locations due to nearby resources and contain small npc run inns and taverns. As guilds grow and gather wealth to their banner, they can choose locations to begin building a city around these "nodes of interest". Cities can contain various businesses, living quarters, arenas, barracks, temples, trade guilds, etc. Larger cities draw larger npc and pc populations, allowing surrounding resources to be farmed more effectively. Guild’s can build as many cities as they wish, and can have just as many cities taken from them by other guilds. Cities can also be razed by both pc and npc populations

that way its not like one guild will be able to defend all of their cities at once rite?

I am really disappointed... And I would cry if I could. So much gameplay wiped out because these two things.
Btw, you forgot the mining, which is going to be like UO... It is also bad.

I believe all that info site said, is that there are no "Prefab" cities like in AoC. That means that the house creation mechanic is robust enough to allow players to create their own cities, starting just as a collection of houses.

Now wether there are any "Binding" mechanics that actualy officialy make this in to a city, is what interests me. Also this "Key Warfare" worries me greatly, as I can see no logical intepritation of that, even assuming translation and understanding problems.

I think I'll make this my official thanks smiley
:hail:
Edit: And I actually want destructible houses as it adds a whole new layer of pvp.
As for player built cities I was thinking when certain guilds make enough houses close together they should be able to build walls and with that a city or something like that.

So INstead of an awesome MMO, we're getting.. UO/Oblivion with pretty graphics and no destructible housing.

Well, guess that about finishes my relationship with MO.

From the features page:

"Choose to be a lone wolf or hermit by finding a secluded place to build your house for storage or studies. Or form a guild with others that desire a keep and eventually a fortress."

Which you can try and steal by killing the guy with the key? Bleh :/ We need a dev to comment on this stuff.

From Q&A: http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/7...questions.html

"2. I apologize if I missed this, but will there be city seiging a la shadowbane?
We'll comment on that later on."

mats persson: http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/2....html#post3273
"any city building?
I'll have to come back on this later."

Not a happy bunny

I cant see why destructable houses are so important...
Well, it could be a problem, if you can put your house wherever you want to, but if some players decide to build a city, that still can be used for a lot of role-playing. And I do think that it will be possible to have influence on the world. Maybe not in that scale that you can take your 300 warriors and burn down a hole city whenever you want, but maybe in a more role-playing kind of way where GMs take over NPCs, interact with your characters and the impact of your doing is manually added to the world?

i think your holding on straws. if they meant that player cities are not "hardcoded guild cities" but still exist as a collection of player houses, i think they would have said so.

even if there are still player cites, then you can't use "key warfare" to take over an entire city unless you have fought everyone in that city. what will happen is that you'll have to hunt down every inhabitant... including the logged off ones, or you' could have an entire army and no opposition controlling the city, and 90% of the houses would be inaccessible.

i think, when they include a good faktion system, there will be big scale battles.

for example in Ultima Online where just a faktion system, and many really big fights happened. When mortal online add some features to a system like in UO, it might be really fun.

i don't really care if housing is destructable. but since there are no guild cities, if a guild makes their own artificial city by lumping all their houses together, then, sure i guess you can call it a "guild city" but it will be indestructable.

that, and the key warfare is pretty lame.

ccoa, if the devs said a lot of the info isn't true, then i'm really hoping the whole thing is just a huge troll. i'm really starting to think it is, and if so it would be hilarious and relieving all at the same time. i mean, think about it... does anyone know this dbltnk guy? he just said "hey guys i got some good info." and everyone just assumed he was telling the truth... now everyone's in a panic over a lot of this info, and he's probably just having a grand ole time... i'm not ready to believe...

i know, i'm still in denial. ccoa talked to them in irc, though, so maybe they just didn't want to release the real info so soon..

until i hear from the devs themselves, i'm going to hold on to what small shred of hope i have left.

Default Yes..

There will be siege warfare and destroyable “buildings” in MO, why would you be able to upgrade your fortress if it’s not for war?

We have not released any detailed information about how cities and warfare will work yet because of the complexity of the system, and details are not yet worked out, but we do have a really interesting system when it comes to city control and warfare. It is a feature that takes lots of time to get it to work well, but I do believe it will be a very interesting system for most players. As the details are not yet finished we don’t want speak to much on the details as it may change.

There will also be some sort of player housing that works as a safe spot for some players. But they will get involved in one way or another into the city control system. More information will be released when we are sure of how it will work.

When it comes to factions it may work similar to UOs 4 factions, many pvp veterans liked that system that’s why we are looking into it and playing around with it. I also plaid lots of faction wars chaos/order and normal guild wars in UO, and I had the best time of my life in a MMO. We do like pvp and warfare and want it to be a great part of the game. And if we see a system/feature like faction wars that starts to interfere with city warfare in a bad way or just split up the players of the pvp part we will try to remake or just freeze the system which makes the pvp part less fun. This is not something you do over a night and must stick with it. This is a system that needs lots of playtime to get right, but hopefully it will be all worth it in the end.

I hope this will give you some understanding of the status and our visions when it comes to warfare in Mortal Online.
