Just to name a few...
Classic Design I hope the classes remain classic. Wizards, warriors, clerics, rogues, etc. I'd also like to see some of the less common, but equally classical archetypes, like the paladin, necromancer, bard, etc. I know the arguement to this is that there's already so many fantasy MMOs out there, but my arguement is, none of 'em have got it right. (WoW doesn't know the difference between a manticore and a wyvern) Give me a game like old UO, akin to D&D where the player decides their adventures, not the game deciding for them. After you give me that I'll happily support every other MMO genre out there. I know it's a skill based game, which I love and prefer, because then it ultimately allows the player to create their own classes. I still remember my bard from UO, not like the typical tamer/bard archetype, but more along the lines of D&D for fun, challenging gameplay, and roleplay. I picked up swords/tactics and magery/eval int/meditation and musicianship/provocation and I felt I had a bard. Great at nothing, but good at everything. On the same token, a warrior is a warrior in most games today, but there should be more variation. A warrior decked out in plate to be nearly invulnerable is more like a knight, where a warrior sacrificing armor to be more agile is more like a barbarian. Give Us Lots of Weapons Thinking off the top of my head now, I honestly can't remember a game that offered more weapons than UO did. I mean c'mon, a war fork? I loved all those different weapons. In fantasy games, weapons can really help define a character. I hope they go beyond the typical axe/sword/mace/daggers and offer us a lot more weapons to choose from. Especially with the religion system. My favorite playstyle has always been a cleric, because religion is such an easy roleplay tool. I loved how churches would often have favored weapons, and the more weapons you offer, the more variation you allow here as well. Like the cleric who worships a God of Death, and as a symbol of their god, they wield a scythe. Make Armor Optional I also hope that "classes" don't get pigeon holed into sets of armor. The knight vs barbarian arguement applies here as well. There should be an advantage and disadvantage to all armor. Wear full plate, become a tank, but lose your agility. It again opens up freedom to the character when you eliminate as many restrictions as possible. The swashbuckler is just as skilled a warrior as any, but they often wear clothes, not armor. Wizards are often in robes to allow freedom of movement for their spell casting, but there's always the battle mage who will wear a breastplate over his robes with a sword at his hip. Anyways... bored at work, and here are just a few of my hopes that Mortal Online will break the mold. Last edited by Enkmar : 26th August 2008 at 19:49. |

Well it would seem that you have everything wrong. If you read the FAQ's it says there are no classes and you won't be limited to what you can and cannot do.
No it's a skill based game which means you can do whatever you wants, so you could be a plate wearing magician, or a cloth wearing berserker. All have their advantages and disadvantages. If you would like to know more you cann read the FAQ's and Answer to your questions 1/2

Hmm. I don't have everything wrong. First of all, you're telling me there are no classes when I'm posting in a forum titled "Classes and Races" Second, if you had read my post, you'd have read the line where I say "I know it's a skill based game." I felt the need to say that since I was emphasizing so much on the classes.
UO was a skill based game as well, and they had templates, or classes basically. It's not a class system, it's a skill system, but that's not to say there won't be common templates or using Mortal Online's terms, classes. There will always be warriors, and there will always be wizards. Just like UO, another skill based game. |

Well I guess I was abit drastic about the everything part. But there's no Classes as you portray them. I think there was a thread somewhere saying they shouldn't be called classes but more so specilizations. You don't pick a class at the character creation screen like you would in some more traditional MMORPG's but you can join NPC guilds like a thieves guild or warriors guild which would further specialize you in your chosen skillset, which is basically what it means by classes.

Yeah, it's basically the opposite of what it is in current games. Instead of having a "template" that you build off of to become more diverse, in MO you have to work toward that template, and it becomes a decision for the player to funnel his talents into one restricted area just to become more powerful in it.

i don't understand why they don't just call it something else. the term "classes" just brings too many bad thoughts to mind..

"Races and Skillcombinations" eh? :P
Because that's exactly what it is. To stay on topic, I could train magic skills and heavy armor defense type skills, so where is the need for optional armor?

I really like the idea of Building or working your way into a class of choice and earning a title which can be viewed as a class, that concept will benefit skilled players i think. Also im hopeing they add a death knight option endgame..

I was wondering if the class progression will have a hero type selection when its all said and done and you have mastered one profession or skill tree? eg "Master Sword Crafter" for a black smith who has maxed his sword training skills!
Thanks! |
