It's pretty damn bad.
Extremely clunky animations... I normally wouldn't complain about this but every single animation has something seriously wrong with it. I don't care if they are focused on graphics, it's not an excuse for such clunkyness, especially when this is supposed to release within the next few months.

People were complaining about AoC and its abundance of blood... DF has easily 3-4x as much blood and it's the brightest shade of red they could have possibly chosen.

It's obviously acted out and not some people playing casually.

I didn't expect much anyways but they really did a terrible job.

also, the beta signup has started.

I didn't say the graphics were bad, I agree on the graphics, but the animations are absolutely terrible.

Watched the movies... not really impressed. The animations looked goofy tbh, an explosion in which you can see square pixels.. I mean c'mon.

Anyway, registered for the beta.. maybe I'll get in and see how the game really is

I am definitely happy with the video. Some animations do seem to be quick and skip frames, but it seems consistent enough to provide a good fighting experience.

ok, yea. some of the animations weren't great.. hopefully the graphic settings weren't turned up all the way. but still, i was very pleased with the footage overall.

It looks promising. I'm just happy that it's not another WoW clone.

First of all i gotta hand it to the DF team for releasing like 20 minutes worth of game footage, it was prolly the coolest thing they could have done for their fan base. I have to admit tho, i was trying as hard as i could to ignore the decade old animations but they lost me as soon as that fleet of ghost ships come floating along out of nowhere...I dunno, sorta seemed like a cheesy method of recycling their naval warfare mechanics.

Here is my prejudice list of Conclusions, followed by a rant i guess:

Graphics: Landscapes looked great. um.....About those animations, has any told the devs that its not the year 1998 anymore?

Melee Combat: Other than strafe I didn't see any dynamics. No counter attacks/jumping out of the way/ dodging/rolling/ducking/twisting etc..twas a dull whack fest.

World/lore: -Seemed lifeless, towns looked bland and generic, the game looks like a glorified Age of Chivalry but with more simplified combat mechanics. (in other words, Pure PvP Zerg fest)

Magic: I didn't see anything creative or interesting.

Ranged Combat: Looked good, standard but good.

Siege/Naval Warfare: -Looks really neat, and the battles did have an epic vibe especially the water-to-land sieges.

Races: I like the doG and Cat humanoids

To be honest the siege's and naval warfare looked pretty cool, but it all looked extremely shallow at the same time, partially because the melee combat looks like it is incredibly boring, i saw nothing more than people standing toe to toe and repetitions of badly animated sword slashing and shield blocking, not to mention it was all in 3rdPV which made the combat look even more boring.

Something that i thought was totally awesome was the archer who climbed/warped/levitated(???) up a tree so he could snipe. It showed FPV for a split second as he was firing down on the enemy, toataly awesome. (real FP arcery+tree/mountain+climbing+MMORPG=Bliss)

The magic looked like it could be fun too but then again it was only shown in 3rdPV, ok sad to say but not only did the casting animations look worse than the first EverQuest but the magic didn't show anything creative and every time a spell hit someone they went flying through the air and it looks exactly like it did back in the day 10 years ago when players would use their grenades on the 2fort map in team fortress classic to boost them selves high into the air... lol (I know Age of Conan over did it with the use of knock backs but at least they animated theirs)

I really hope they can bring it to life before release, that's only a few months away tho =/

Thanks for the heads up on the beta for Darkfall, I've not really followed it because it just seemed "meh" and after watching the 6 part video on youtube I still say 'meh'. Personally I still like the look and sound of Mortal better.

tasos said that they were going to wait til last to focus on graphics/animations, so i would imagine they'll improve slightly before final release. and graphics/animations can always be upgraded in the future ofc.

This was true for AoC, and WOW both had horrific sliding issue and stiff rigid animations and many bugs that made the game look awful until right around the end of beta, so animations can be fixed up pretty quick, i wouldn't doubt it at all. i'd defiantly play it right now as, the sieging looks badass.

First, HOLY SHIT, FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Long-term follower on Darkfall forums and finally getting what is going to be the best mmorpg ever created.

Second, here is the thing about Darkfall, it has absolutely nothing to do with amazing graphics or animation, the reason the animation is kind of sloppy is because it has to be for most computers and the server iteself to run well with 200+ people battleing in the same areas.. Same with character graphics, but even than I personally think the graphics look amazing, at times I thought the shadows and textures were actually some of the best of any game released or being released.

That said, still, graphics don't matter when it comes to large scale battles and trust me you will not win an arguement against that when it comes to Darkfall, Darkfall is a game created for those who want a real mmorpg and a real mmorpg does not include graphics that are so amazing that they will not allow 20 people in an area without lagging, that defeats the MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER part.

A lot of you need to play the game to really know what i'm talking about I suppose.

Time to quit my 2nd job, dump the girl and get a new graphics card!

Sloppy animations aren't because of an attempt at making the game run better, they are, well, because they are sloppy animations.

And I will also add that WoW/AoC's sliding bug was much less significant because nearly every animation in that video had something wrong or awkward about it.

On a more positive note, naval combat looks good, and although the melee combat didn't interest me too much in the video, the environment looks like fun to explore.

Give me another FPS MMORPG with more than 100 people on the screen at once that does not have this kind of animation.. Hell, give me one that is not a MMORPG, just a FPS.

Have fun, you will be looking for a while.

Lower your standards pal, you will not be getting a FPS based MMORPG that does not have Animation problems, and tbh is shows you don`t know jack about animation, because animation can be lowered in parts to be less hassle on a server and client side, if moving right only has 3 animations instead of 20 animations, that will have less strain on both server and client.

Still, opinions are opinions, you not playing a game solely because of graphics however is a biast opinion. Maby if your opinion was more about why the gameplay itself was bad your opinion might be slighty more respected.

The key thing to this video is no fps or ms lag, animation lag is completely acceptable when put up against fps and ms lag.. you are basicly argueing that you would rather have fps and ms lag over alittle animation lag.

i don't really understand what you were expecting melee combat to be.. i mean, you swing at somebody.. they block sometimes, and sometimes you hit them... that's melee combat and if you didn't like that i can't imagine you'll like MO's melee combat either, unless they implement matrix style back arching dodge flying dagger combat, which would indeed be quite something... i just wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Ok... I didn't say the graphics were bad, I said the animations were clunky, and they are. They are unpolished and not what I would expect in a game that you actually pay money for. I'm sorry your fanboism couldn't catch that.

I'm sure you'll all be playing DF very soon, sometime within the next 4 years or so which you guys should consider soon at this point.

It will be like the pointing the obvious but the game looks incomplete. Okay, I go pass the gfx and utterly rediculous spell and sound effects for the sake of cool ideas but the gameplay is not polished yet. This game can't come out in 2008. If it does, it looks like it is less complete than AoC is. I remeber AoC previews that looked so polished and the end product ended up being not as much so. So, I think Darkfall still needs a lot of work.

I think they should add some sort of soft targeting like AoC's since the combat looks silly and clunky. Animations are quite incomplete too.

It has a good potential, and it doesn't need all that crazy gfx to be good. It is even better for complete seamless world and real time combat but just it needs further polish in gameplay areas to justify that.
