Default The BIG broken launcher thread!

As a lot of you are having issues with the launcher and getting the game started, I've found myself saying the same things over and over in dozens of threads.

If you are having issues using the launcher, the below might shed some light on your problem.

How the launcher works!

The launcher consists of two programs, the launcher itself ("Mortal Online Launcher.exe") and the updater ("updater.exe") in your main MO install folder. The launcher is what downloads patches and applies them to your game, the updater grabs new versions of the launcher when they are released.

Timeout or connection errors

The mosetup.exe you probably installed from does have an out of date launcher! If your launcher is getting timout or connection failure error messages, you probably have the old launcher as the new one uses a more stable server for version checks and patch notes.

You may need to run the updater, if this is the case; however, the updater connects to the same overloaded server as the old launcher. This means the updater itself will probably timeout as the main patch server is very overloaded right now.

Run the updater over and over again until it finally makes a connection to the server and downloads the new launcher! Once you get that new launcher you'll have a much smoother ride.

An exception occured during a WebClient request

This is usually due to security settings on your system, since for the launcher and/or updater to do it's job it needs to modify files. Windows Vista and Windows 7 people can be most plagued by this, but unfortunately it's not a problem with MO or the launcher, but your operating system security settings. Two solutions can usually do the trick: first, try running the launcher/updater in admin mode!

If running in admin mode doesn't work, try moving your game installation from the default Program Files folder into somewhere under C:\Users\YourNameHere. Less security restrictions are placed on your user folder, while program files has some of the harshest security settings by default.

If you can't stand the high security, like me, you can always disable UAC.

If none of the above works, it's probably a server error (see above section).

Unable to connect

If your launcher shows an unable to connect error message in both the patch note window and the "console" on the right, you either have security settings in Windows set too strictly, a firewall blocking outgoing connections (the built in Windows firewall won't do this, but some 3rd party solutions can), or you have improper proxy settings.

To make sure proxy is disabled, go into Internet Options. Internet Options can be found in Windows Vista/7 by typing "internet options" into the start menu field, or otherwise inside Internet Explorer's tools menu up at the top. Choose the Connections tab, and then click the LAN settings button. In there make sure Automatically detect settings is checked and ALL other options are not checked.

I HIGHLY recommend downloading the patch through utorrent like paratus suggests, i have never gone over 4kbs on the mo patching server.

Awesome! Downloaded the new launcher from the italian site and it worked like a charm. I am also getting great dl speeds (1.5MB/s) using this new launcher so utorrent was not needed for me.

Excellent job both with this topic and with the .dll you've provided to improve the patcher's performance (+ rep).
Thank you!

Once the download is done, place the file inside your "mortalonline" folder, which is inside your main MO folder, and run it. It should patch your client up. Run the launcher and repeat this process for any more patches you need that go too slow.
I don't want to be picky, but I've read of people having trouble with running the patch alone.

Personally, I always place the patch downloaded with torrent in the "mortalonline" folder, run the launcher so that it will recognize the patch, apply it and everything runs smoothly.

I honestly don't have any problems with the launchers torrent patcher. In fact I'm redownloading right now because my books are broken, getting 1.1MB/s down and 80KB/s up.

No offense. I know you are trying to help everyone. But the methods of patching the game are getting ridiculous. I have clicked my updater.exe file like 20 times already.. and it will never connect. The end user should not have to go through this.

If you changed servers, fine. But don't have the server locations hard-coded into the updater/launcher.exe files. Put them in an .ini file or something, so all it takes is a simple notepad edit if you guys decide to change the servers again.

It's technically not hardcoded, actually. The server that's responding slowly is a permanent server, and will continue to be used; however, it's also set as one of the "direct download" servers simply because the new dedicated "direct download" server is not yet active. Once it is, the load will be removed from the current server and performance won't be a problem.

Did you try downloading the launcher from the Italian fansite instead?

Uh my patching thing worked perfectly like 700-1200kb/s all the time until it had downloaded to 1920.44 MB (the size it shows in launcher that the patch (mopatch0to05) is supposed to be but then it just continued downloading it and it shows that its 97% done and now its in like 1973.95 MB / 1920.44 MB and the downloading speed reduced to like 0.5kb/s after it got over 1920mb... And i really dont want to stop the downloading cuz its 98% now, so can anyone tell me whats this for..?

Awesome thread. The link to the italian site really saved my ass, since no other client has worked so far.

I'm just wondering why the fansite hosts the new client, while Mortalonline.com still seem to use the old (and not functional) client?

There's a little extra data overhead with torrents which confuses the current launcher's data downloaded display. Ignore it, though, as it doesn't affect the download itself. Once your download hits 100% it's done. Leave it going.

Star Vault is hosting the same launcher, as I described in the OP. The issue is that Star Vault's server is serving thousands of requests every second and is overloaded.

Really? I'm talking about the EXE-file at 91 mb, which hasn't been working at all (in contrary to this client). Well, I guess you're right, and in either way: Thanks.

Does the launcher still work like this:

but hopefully we wont need to update the launcher that many times more. =)

No, the new method is a lot smoother. Instead of trying to copy over itself, which is not good as 90% of Windows configurations lock any file that's in use and/or executing, if the launcher sees it's out of date it'll launch the updater.exe, which in turn downloads the new launcher over top of the old one and starts the launcher up when done.

Default Scan Error

I have done all of the above, installed the patches via a bittorrent client, installed the new launcher, new DLL and I am continually getting

Scan Error!

Unable to connect to the remote server

Is this still just an overloaded patch server?

Thanks for the thread... but one asks one self... why on earth would a company send out a product that had a key element broken? (the launcher.)

I'm a new customer - and I dutifully follow the e-mailed instructions, only to find that I need to dig in the forums, and go to irc chat to get this to work? and even then, it's not the company that helps with the issues... but other users?!!?

it bodes ill for the future... the only salvation that I see is that there is such a helpful community - I'm willing to put up with a lot of technical glichy crap to be able to be a part of a good community. (aint that what these games are 'really' all about anyway?)

anyway, - off I go to the Italians to try to get the correct updater package that shoulda been included in the install .rar I got from the main site just yesterday.

Beta tests... ya gotta love em eh?

any ideas how to fix this?
