Lightbulb Suggestion : Targeting system

Currently the tab targeting system leaves much to be desired, also absence of names above heads that every other mmo has except df, which has the fps style names pop up when you get your crosshair on them.

Personaly Id like to see names above heads all the time, and have them coloured once youve interogated them ie targeted them. However permament names above heads probably goes beyond the hardcore gamers and devs vision so if it aint gonna happen its no biggie.

So here are my sugggestions for the targeting system

1) Allow people to left click on someone to select them as a target when in mouse mode

2) make the area to get the target up the size of the mob/player, it can be damn awkward to target at times

3) make a key ie ESC clear the current target

4) when you damage a mob/player and its not targeted make that the currently selected target (have this as a togglable option)

5) When a mob/player is targeted have their name above their head coloured to their flag colour

6) When someone attacks you or steals from you (not snoops) make them the currently selected target (also toggleable)

7) Make Tab a target toggle mode - When you click tab it puts it into target scanning mode, as you look around at diffrent people the current target keeps changing to the person your looking at. When you hit tab again it locks it to that target

8) Do as DF does, and 99% of fps do aswell and make it so the name appears over head, again coloured in flag colour, when you look at a person

9) Do nothing to the current targeting system, its fine as it is.

Please post which options youd like to see and which youd hate to see, or any ideas you have to improve the current targeting system .

Forget the pointless bashing from the first poster, but with that said, expect much more from other "tardcores". The only excuse being brought up is that you need short-distant targeting to "balance" magic and pet aggro, which is bullshit - as pet owners still find a way to work you, and magic seems very untested and underpowered atm. Otherwise there is just making it easier to guard-grief people, but if this is the system they are going with for that, then it's not going to change the fact it will always be abused, regardless.

1. Yes, please. Though there should be a limitation on distance, like 15 yards or so, maybe a little more. Your cursor shouldn't have anything to click on past that.

2. Make the length equal to that of the above comment, you should be able to read names from further still.

3. Yes, please. Or at least have tab cycle to the next, or on/off.

4. Yes, please. Makes clear sense to me.

5. Whether that is an overhead kind of thing or not is a good idea or not, I dunno. I can see issues with that... well not really, but someone is gonna bitch (that being the issue I foresee). Otherwise I think it's a good idea to help in group skirmishes to keep from hitting your friends or innocents. EDIT; oh, stealth. No matter how well hid you are the nametags stands out. Best leave this out and just extend the range of targetting.

6. That would be nice, but of course thieves are going to cry about it. I don't see why players equivalent to swarming flies need any more help to do what they do though. Persistence pays out over chance.

7. Makes no sense as if you click tab to cycle targets you can't simply click it again to lock one. You'd have to hold it, but what's the point if simply targeting something in the first place is "locking it"? Unless you want this as a countermeasure to point #6.

8. No overhead numbers necessary, could use a combat log window instead... and bringing up DF will only get you flamed here.

9. ... then why the suggestions above?

Some of your post makes sense, the rest totally doesn't, but there are good points to be made here either way.

Glad someone can see the sense in some of my suggstions anyway

Good additions too GTWander, ofc my suggestions could use some improvement and yeah agree with range you could click on at, but that might add more server load with range checks.

Also let me clarify points 6 7 & 8

6) I plan to play a thief aswell, so Im not an anti thief freak, I just recognise that the current system could do with some tweaking as it stands and this might help

7) I meant to change the tab targeting system so that when you hit tab the 1st time it puts it into targetting mode, meaning that as you look around whatever you look at automatically updates the current selected target on the target bar and when youve got the right target you could hit tab again to lock it on that target, ie nolonger auto change which is the selected target.

point 8) I didnt mean any numbers, just the persons name coloured above the selected targets head ie if you had me targeted youd see Sorus above my head written in red / blue / grey

option 9 is just to the hardcores could just say option 9 if they didnt like any of my suggestions

I would like to see a realistic system.
That you don't know the names of every player in the game instantly, that you need to "find out" what their names are. or maybe put in names by yourself and those names will be stored aswell.

Something like that would be great tbh.
