This is indeed planned for the future, but the current approach is to wait for the engine-patch from Epic that will make it possible for ai to, guess what, USE PATHFINDING.
Then see how that works out and make it work good with 1 pet and then add control-points similar to what UO had.

It has been stated by the devs on IRC that future plans for taming will involve more then one pet at a time.
Tamers will have X number of taming points and animals will X number of these points to tame depending on their threat/profit level. So say you have 4 taming points, a weasel takes 1 pt, a pig 2, a horse 3. You can tame 4 weasels or 1 weasel and a horse or two pigs. (note these are not finalized figures, just a rough example). Though not stated by the devs, I'd expect there to be money sinks into pets in the future in the from of armor or some other improvements that can be lost when the pet dies. -edit- I seem to have missed sebs post somehow...
