perhaps this creature is a mix of different races as well? (hint hint, look in the description)
and actually, the fur is composed of thick, coarse bristles, so it provides protection against actual attacks and weapons. of course it doesn't provide as much protection as metal armor, but it's substantial enough to prevent
deep cuts from swords and it cushions attacks from blunt objects.
