I was surfing the gamespot when I come upon this http://gdc.gamespot.com/story/6207505/ can you believe it? the developer of AoC actually trying to make a skill based MMO. It looks cool but wonder how will it turn out to be.
Actually I do hope they improve, because it is the gamers who benefit.

Yea, customization been always a big thing for me, I like to customized to the detail sometimes just to suit my style of playing, and sometimes for RP purpose. and jtmk, I'm not trying to devalue their efforts or anything, because we all here (mostly) agree on how AoC turn out, I'm just hoping that they learn from their mistakes and make something more interesting, because in the short video, the guy actually said might as well skip the grinding and this makes me think of AoC and somehow ignite the sarcasm in me.

I don't know if "catching up" is the right term, but they definitely could have changed the methodoloy and mechanics of the game as of late to coinside with the shouting match for grindless MMOs. Well, levelless anyway, since devs don't know what it takes to fool people into not considering anything a grind. TSW has been in development for years though, but conceptual phases. I have fairly sure the announcement lined up with their final draft on what they plan to go with, because they have said nothing about it beyond conspiracy and other mysteries. I doubt it will have puzzles though, sadly the hype and cryptic messages may have nothing to do with actual gameplay... They would have to pack them out at a rate that can beat the fansites with the answers to them.

That game has been in the works for 7 years now iirc. Granted its been not been prioritized since the director have been working on the Dreamfall series in the meantime. I dont think he had anything to do with AoC.
The project isnt new, and have already changed name a couple of times. In lack of a better name, a few years the project went as "The World Online". Its also been known as CryGaia. FunCom have for several years already been putting out little internet riddles for people to solve that eventually leads back to TSW. Im looking forward to see what will become of it. |

I can't say I'm too inclined to look towards FunCom again, after the terrible failure called AoC. But I guess we will see what the future brings, maybe they actually managed to learn something from the mistakes they made with their past MMO's.

People have to remember that there are different teams working within FunCom. As someone already mentioned it's the people behind Dreamfall, not AoC, that's working on this one. (people say the same thing wherever I look, I hope it's true) Dreamfall and the games before it was awesome so I'm actually positive to see what this game can bring.
I'm also theorizing about the possibility that this might be the browser based game made on Unity. But then, this game has been in the works for quite some time, so they might be using their own tech. Unity is awesome by the way. Links that vaguely supports my theory. :P FunComs new mmog a casual browser game Unity3d Blog http://unity3d.com/

New game director = new hope.
However, lets hope they keep their game in alpha/beta until it is actually ready to release this time. Age of Conan released about a year too early and it is still having problems. Anarchy Online was plagued by the same mistakes.

Translation
"combat will not be all, end all", means "combat will be spray and pray, like Tabula Rasa". "coming for PC and XBox 360" means "coming for PC, dumbed down and with UI set up for Xbox 360 controller". I know FunCom is different teams and all, but after what that company did with Age of Conan's release, they have to change their ways a great deal before I run out and buy another one of their products. |

I agree, but some of the ideas that were used for AoC were very very good just the implementation. The erm "hype" for this game has been about since 2002, let's hope they get it right for the sake of the market of the genre! |

Yeah, and like others have said, they released the game far too early. Level 55-80 wasn't actually bad, even though it was unfinished, compared to most other MMOs with the only possible exception of WoW, but it was such a stark contrast to the previous 55 levels that did the damage, which only goes to show that the previous 55 levels were actually GOOD. If only they focused on PvP and got it out there within a month like they originally promised, I belive the game would have been much better off than it is now. Just the sheer amount of work, audio and motion capture alone that went into it, was fantastic.

I wouldnt get too hyped up about Xbox.....remember...Age of Conan has been sporting that same line since 2005....year after launch and have you heard Funcom say one thing about it?
Yeah...exactly. The new game director is for AoC, TSW has a different game director, or at least it did when the old AoC director was still there. still...same company, so I am not getting my hopes up about it. I didnt appreciate their arrogance when beta testers were screaming about combat and their standard reply was always...it's working internally. Til launch, then they wiped the boards and you had no way of throwing it up in their faces and calling them on it.

I've got a feeling that some people here forgot how looks developing a game under a publisher command. I will never believe a developer in his ideas, until he won't state, that he will selfpublish his own game. Seems to me, that there won't be any rival to MO for next 3-4 yrs. And it's not about features a game will show, but things forced to be cut down and put on hold (read as: never see day light), and overall turn from first game specific to a final product (read as: from ostentatious pvp game, to another crappark).

I would rather await the release of World of Darkness, but I wish any MMO good luck, perhaps they will be able to learn from the mistakes that AoC made and steer a course clear around them. whopefully they don't see its features as the problem, because it did have a nice feature list, just terrible implementation.

I followed this game scince before AoCs release. They had a great opening marketing puzzle kind of like the hidden MO counter background, and some e-mail games with the forum members with puzzles to solve, Some very cool ARG stuff followed by over a year of absolutely NOTHING. I was very happy when I found MO.
I love the setting, think its a great concept, but have no faith in this project. Still I'll follow it as it comes out graphics look good, but it just doesn't look sandbox enough, which seems unfortunate for them. Also X-box, meh.

I could swear I made a detailed post about The Secret World!!!O.o where did it go?!
Anyhow, be cautious because this is FC but do not disregard this entirely. Unless they run out of money, this game won't come out broken or not finished. This is Ragnar Tornquist we are talking about. Him and his team are amazing and I have huge faith in this project. Now, it is confirmed that it will be skill based there is almost no reason not to like this game!

Yep looks good and I think for all MMO old and new fans over the next few years we are in for some great treats. As the net improves and more and more people can afford to get on we are the ones who are going to push the developers.
One thing I did like about MO "teasers" is that real footage has been used. Anyone can film a good teaser ie - the day the world stood still - lol looked good was crap.

though they did recently release a bunch of "tokens" in response to the community solving the next step in the ARG they are running. Speculation is these might be beta keys (no confirmation though).

Wow, this sounds really cool. Funcom makes good games, but they always release them in such a crappy condition it doesn't matter.
Maybe they'll learn, but I ain't gonna fall for hype. I'm a huge fan of supernatural and this seems very much like it |

I came upon it a couple of months ago but thought it was a bit wierd, I mean come on, they say the world will end in 2012 based on Mayan myth. But now I know bit more I actually want to see how it goes. This just adds one more to the list of games I'm tracking which is pretty long as it stands.
