Okay, at first I was against the fact of NOT having an auction house. But now, I realized I really wanna know "Who the hell made that frickin' awesome sword?!"
Heh, let's put it that way : No auction houses, it's bad publicity for people trying so hard to get known around the world. BUT maybe there could be a way to commercialize your crafted items or crafting skills. Maybe you could pay some people to advertise you, or all by yourself, draw some posters, that you could put somewhere, maybe on some bulletin board in town, with a limit of course, or if you put to many, guards would come and rip them apart. Also, there could be "somekind" of auction house. Let's say I want that item so badly and it's for sale, but damn, I just got robbed and I ain't got a coin! Well, I'll just make a small deposit and the item will be mine unless someone comes and gives like three times more than I gave, or simply buys it. It could also get stolen, sure. That's what I'd think would be cool. |

I say NO because its to hard to buy something at the auction in an open PVP game. The minute you get the auction house screen up you will be attacked.
I used to love picking on people getting faction Missions in SWG.

This thread mentions player run regional auction houses which could be a viable alternative to the magically linked auction houses in other games.
http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/2...facturing.html Of course since a player is making extra profit off of the auctions the prices would be higher. This would discourage people who are smart from using the auction houses. It would probably ruin the economy anyway since most people just want the stuff now without going through the effort of finding a crafter to buy it from.

Ya, I'm with you on that one. Your posts (and others) explaining why it's better to have regional economies changed my mind about this. I'm willing to put up with the minor inconvenience of finding a merchant pc to buy something from rather than running to an NPC who magically sells stuff for everyone in the game. It just creates so much more realism in the game.

Back in the old UO days, people had player ran AH's, and they'd hire guards to keep pks' out ect. Good times, I might add. If they add a universal AH in the game, this would take away the ability for a guild to take on a task like that. Just my two cents

Universal auction houses are out of the question.
But I don't think I would even want local auction houses, or at least not for common objects.. Do you see people auctioning fish in real life ? No, it's ridiculous. Auctions should not be for every item in the world. They should make auctions a special kind of player contract, just like in Eve. That will push people to use them only for very specific items. And use the "marketplace" for common items, just like it should be. |

Speaking of fish, and fruits and food. Do you think that they should decay over time similiar to irl? So when you fish, you gather so many, have a way to keep them cool, and then would have to run to town, or cook them up! AH type stuff would be things like weapons and armor and the like. And at best I think it should be optionally player/guild ran if that's what floats their boats. Not npc ran, but that's just me.

i would like to have player run auction houses.
it's really simple: let's say I'm a trader. a lot of crafters & adventurers contact me to help them sell their items. i set a date, a time and a place. i post it on the player-city forums or any nearby guild forums and in-game on signposts (if i can). when the time comes, everyone who wants to gathers in the player-built auction house. i go through each item one by one, raving about it, maybe letting the crafter speak his words about it too... people start offering prices, and i give the item to the highest bidder. this way, instead of a computer having all the fun, the trader gets the fun of running an auction house and doing the whole show, and it's all local, so a lot of traders can have that fun in different places, and a lot more crafters can be the best crafters in their nearby area, and it doesn't involve any gameplay mechanics other then the ability of items & currency to exchange hands. If no AH, there needs to be some good way of advertising, rather than spamming major locations with Ctrl+V

well since this is medieval games setting, my preferred "primitive style" of shopping wins
if the game has integrated distance-based voice chat then this won't be a problem. people will more likely react to what they hear then what they read, and they are more likely to react to a person then to an answering machine |

"The Subway" in Asheron's Call was not only used for transportation to locations all over the world, it was the place to go to if you wanted to buy or sell goods. It would be nicer if that was a designated market location for /market WTB/WTS spam vs. the whole city hearing it.

market-places-happen-in-most-societies-naturally...
the-only-exception-to-this-that-i-can-think-of-is-early-roman-society where-people-lived-above-their-shops-and-streets-where-known-for-specific-products. so-the-whole-city-was-the-market-place... later-on-they-developed-centralized-bazaars-too-though. |

I personally do not like auction houses very much.
i could live with regional auction houses, but serverwide auction houses are a no no for me. ok, buyers are getting things easier, and for sellers who do not wanna care much about selling, its easier too. But there is a huge danger in crushing the economy with auction houses, especially with crafted items. And in all mmorpgs i played so far, there are people who got their fun out of the trading. So what i would like to see, are local market areas, where people usually tend to sell their stuff. Like GF or EC tunnel in EQ. Maybe it would be possible to design such market places, so they get some atmosphere as well. (besides that it would be great to have auction houses for in-game auctions of very valuable items. also this might be just a dream.) chu |

As for that kind of selling, it's the best interaction and fun wise imo, I loved sitting in Ecommons on everquest and selling my wares.. it's better then throwing it at an npc and having it do the job for me.. it's all about the player interaction that makes a game fun for me and trade interaction is extremely fun for me. |

Selling from Offline Stalls, or Selling from your home/keep/castle are definitely preferred imo to a centrallized Auction House. This is my favoured method, in with keeping the feel of a medieval fantasy world.
While online, and making transactions, could increase a "mercantile" skill, which after higher ranks would allow you to open larger stalls (online and offline). But the skill would only increase while making transactions online. I've seen this work in many, many, many korean mmo's. ***** Another possibility is to make one of your character slots a "trader" type, and since he is a trader type, he would be able to be logged in as your own personal servant/bank/trading stall. Having access to him via a pin number, while logged on your main, so you can modify your prices and add goods, as well as take funds. This would act the same as the above listing for an offline trader, not providing a skill point increase for transactions. I know this option isn't very likely, but I wanted to throw it out there. |

I would just much rather go to a specific location, be it more official (marketplace type area in a town,) a player-run village with tradesman that gather, etc. then sitting in any one town nowhere near a tradesmen or market and having one of the channels spammed. Then again it depends on communication will work in the g |
