Anything you say or do can and will be held against you in a court of law. And that guy probably isn't rich, he just got a massive debt to pay back.
I really feel that that the meaning of that sentence have changed over time, because originally it was a warning that it's a bad idea to speak with the police before you've seen your lawyer, but it sort of have morphed into a threat.

Huh? The cop was busy giving the guy a ticket, he shouldn't have been trying to drive the car at all. Remember this is not Canada where people don't respect the cops
