Should I Get This Game?

  1. I'm sure everyone who comes on this forums is a fan of Mortal Online; so, now thinking about the title I have chosen, it seems rather obvious what the answer will be. But, why? I've been considering to get it since June only to have it lost within the long list of to-do's that were never done during the last three-and-a-half months. At any rate, I have been reading quite a bit about this game, and while everything describing this game seems extraordinary, I have read mostly not-so-great reviews. Why would this be? Why should I get this game? Convince me please, if you can be bothered to do so! :D

    Thanks.

if you can keep your expectations very very low then this game might surprise you. unfortunatly it sounds like you already have high expectations. as long as you understand that this game is far from finished you'll be ok.

basicaly you are paying to play an open beta.

there are LOTS of buggs, lots of exploits, lots of broken code everywere. lots fo things that dont work as they should and every patch seems to brake a few more. having sed that it's pretty much one of a kind right now. if you like the basic idea of the game then you might actually not kick yourself for buying the game.
be warned it's not a solo or new player friendly.
if you frustrate easy dont bother. if you like the challange of making do with little then this is the game for you.
  3. Interesting point of view. I like the fact that this game is made by independent developers, which might make me able to forgive some of the problems that this game faces. I'm sure that they have to fund the game's construction somehow, and this is their way of doing it.

At the same time though, it seems like a gamble. If they manage to make their brainchild as cool as it seems on paper, then, wow. But, I'm still not sure if I should get this game or not.

I have been following this game since mid-June and only just bought it late last night. Haven't had the chance to play it yet as the game client is huge and I have work the next day.

The reviews by gaming websites have been largely negative, but back when Darkfall (similar to MO but lacks the level of interactivity and has an unbearable grind) first came out Eurogamer gave it a score of two out of ten. The reviewer pretty much slammed almost every aspect of the game, but AV countered by saying the reviewer played the game for only a few short hours and barely scratched the surface of what it had to offer. If you want to know more:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/darkfall-online-review - This is the second review of Darkfall by Eurogamer, which they gave four out of ten.

http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=185060 - Response from AV regarding the first Eurogamer review.

Anyway, the point I'm making is that official game reviews are, in my opinion, somewhat unreliable and I tend to treat it as merely the personal experiences of the reviewers. If I'm really keen on finding out what the game in question is truly like, I'd buy it and spend some time playing it so I can come up with a conclusion which is true for myself and based on my own personal experiences, not those of others who may or may not share the same interests and views as me.

As for MO, I've been watching plenty of YouTube videos about it; some are spectacular, some are boring and others are downright hilarious like this one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ3ebIpEUEM

The videos kept up my interest in the game, as every week someone would put up new ones which showcases the different aspects of what was possible in the game. Then there are the players themselves, who would often post interesting information about the game which, again, should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism as a general rule. This would include my words here.

Hope this helps you to decide whether or not MO is worth your time and money.

The bottom line is that the answer to your question depends primarily on you...

If you know what you are getting into, a work in progress .Have the patients and imagination to entertain yourself in a world with options but no specific direction. Like the full loot open PvP concept. And most have all you don't mind a few hiccups in the development process.

    Then get it!

If kinda but not sure then wait a few weeks for the big upgrade so you don't discourage yourself from a game with a lot going for it but polish.

With the implementation of the "Epic Games" patch in the next few weeks the game should get a lot better. See the latest newsletter for details.
  7. You guys have given me some good perspective, thanks! I'm leaning towards buying it, but I'm really not sure as of yet. 40 dollars is a large investment for an MMO that is, in itself, a gamble. And on top of that there are monthly fees. I'll keep looking up things. Keep posting your opinions please!

Every time I buy a new mmorpg it is a gamble in itself, and I have done so with many of them over the years... UO, DAoC, WoW, AO, LotRO, EVE, AoC, EQ2, DFO  and now MO. Nearly all of them were like MO at the time when I bought them; bug-ridden, somewhat broken, unplayable and bland. But over time, nearly all of them have improved manifold and today they are shining examples of what their developers aimed to achieve.

On the question of whether to buy the game or not, for me it really depends on how long you're willing to wait before going ahead with it, if you do plan on doing so, that is. Part of the reason I bought it last night was because I wasn't sure if the summer deal of 20% off would last much longer. As for the monthly fees, well... if I look at how much I spend on coffee a week which is close to $20 and around $40 for fuel for my car each fortnight, when I buy a monthly subscription to a mmorpg I'm paying probably less than 50 cents a day if I calculate it roughly.
  9. True enough, I suppose. I'd like to be a part of an MMO in its early stages and be one of the veterans of its time. But, I obviously have other things to think about. I'm a senior in high school. I plan on joining the navy. College throughout and after the navy. Then what? What kind of person will I be? Will I still want to play it then? Will I have time? Holy crap am I deviating so far from the actual issue. Screw it- I'll buy it tomorrow. :p
  10. rs3080 Member

Hmm, if you don't have time and money is an issue then I would think carefully before you decide to buy. I work full-time and only have a few hours a week for myself, besides other real life commitments but I still bought it because I personally enjoy mmorpgs. If you decide to buy then I'd say treat it as a side hobby, play it from time to time and then move on when you join the navy. You'll still have your account if you come back to the game later on in life (unless SV shuts down or the world ends, of course :p ). By then, MO will probably be much better and many more people will be playing it.

One other thing, if you just want to try the game out but don't want to commit to monthly subscriptions then either buy the game through PayPal or just cancel any recurring monthly subscriptions so that you don't get charged when your free month (that comes with the game when you buy it) ends.
  11. In short, if you like what you have read about how MO work and can expect some bugs until we get the Epic patch in 2-3 weeks (that will fix lots of things).

MO is not a MMO for everyone. Some like WoW alike MMOs, some like MMOs like Mortal Online and some like both. Some don't like MO after just a few days of play and some continue playing MO and enjoy it even after a year.

MO is a very special game, not like anything else you have been playing.

    This

I would say probably wait out until after the Epic patch, but dont let me stop you diving in right away. Just have realistic expectations, and you should have fun.

There is a lot of fun to be had in this game, thanks to its realistic nature. One good example can be seen in the report from one of my Community guilds events, which can be read here: http://www.theoldergamers.com/Mortal_Online/entry/event-report-jungle-run/

There are some other articles on the site you may also be interested in.

Anyway, the decision is yours, but if you manage your expectations I do think you can find immense enjoyment in MO :)
  13. Froxer Junior Member

I would say its the MMO that doesnt REALLY require you to put any time in it... I mean, you dont have to grind for stuff you can still pvp and do as good as everyone else because it is Skill dependent not really Gear dependent (This is at least SV's view of their game).

So having little time for the game wont really matter you will still have a blast when you get in and start killing people like a baawws. (Sure you will be killed a lot in beginning but when u learn how to handle urself u will be just fine.)
  14. :D

OP wait till end of month when they will release that Epic patch and try the game out. It may even bring free trial or sth since SV spoke about marketing the game and thousands joining the game world.

Played it and it was total crap. So unrealistic and bad. Ideas was good but honestly it wasn't fun.

Mortal Online is great, try it.
  16. Narrat Senior Member

Not gonna tell ya whether or not you should buy... you should definitely read through some of the whine threads on these forums though; most of the complaints are blown absolutely out of proportion, but lowering your expectations will greatly improve your experience.

While your deciding though, I'd definitely recommend downloading the client. It'll take a long, long time, so it's best to get it out of the way so if/when you decide to play, you can jump right in.

This... For now the game doesn't worth the subscription (neither the cost) IMHO, though I'm playing it right now (more for the guild-mates and less for the game itself). It's funny, but there is too much bug right now.
  18. jamsey700 Member

Well guys I been reading all over the forums lately and I have just bought the game like 1+ week ago and its very interesting and awesome so far I really strongly advice people to get this game if you really love sandbox MMORPG because it really is fun and you should buy it really worth the money don't listen to other people they just trolls.
  19. They're not trolls. It is their opinion, and your own opinion isn't a justifiable statement, hence -opinion-.

I'm still considering whether or not to get this game. I think I will, maybe even tonight. The concept seems too amazing for me to pass over.

    Edit: I just bought it.
