Asia is cheap as fuck, Shanghai not so much. Shanghai, as hong kong and singapor are business hubs, the cost of living in these blobs is raising dramatically, and the housing policy of the PRC doesn't really help shanghai. In shanghai count 400 to 600 bucks per month for your accomodation (shared apt, i don't recommend living alone or you'll pay much more and die of boredom). Then food price vary like crazy. You can get huge and rather good chinese meals that cost few dollars at the right places. Or you can get cheap microwave crap that cost much more in "hype" places. Then there are more western-like restaurants that can be very expensive (like restaurants in any city). didn't try to buy my own food at the supermarket for now, but i expect it to be cheap. Electronics are mostly at the same prices in official shops (apple etc.) if you want cheap electronics you need to go hunt for it in the small stores at your own risk (having a chinese techie friend or speaking chinese yourself is highly recommended) Textile is much more insteresting in the way you can have tailored suits and stuff for very low price. Some people advise that being in shanghai is a good time to update your wardrobe Then again, i'm landed only few days ago, so i can't say about everything. So far it's cheap, but not as cheap as I expected. However if you just want to travel, then S-E asia is the perfect place. It's mostly safe (if you don't try to drive), people are nice, and it's as i said cheap as fuck. You can rent hotel rooms for 5$, eat for 1$ etc.etc. Also you have very beautiful landscape so it's perfect for backpacking.
Why are you there anyways? I suppose I could make my explore-the-world experience happen in a couple of years, I gotta figure out exactly what I want to see and where though...
Studies. Starting september i'll learn chinese and have course on doing business in china, visiting companies etc. In the current era learning chinese or brasilian are precious skills.
Portuguese do Brazil, officialy. Chances are that if you learn portuguese in portugal, brasileños will have trouble understanding you, and reciprocally. And when you say portugal, you think of a backwater south european country that is almost bankrupt, and when you say brazil, you think of a rising country in expansion (and additionally of beaches, tropical forest and transgender people)
I also think of stabbings, people getting mugged, rape, cheap boob-jobs and lots of other plastic surgery.
Sitting at my desk, in my living room, with the sun sneaking through the gap in the curtains. My dog snoozing in his bed under the window, and the radio on in the background. Should be working. But it's soooooo warm. And my brain just won't wake up
Not office no. Just a desk I work mainly from home when I am not teaching. Currently trying to make myself work on my PhD thesis. In theory this is writeup year but I havent finished the research yet I've backed mysef into a corner and now there are deadlines looming eveyr which way!
Well, I need to finish the chapter I'm working on ooooh....about a week ago I also have to work out a couple of reading lists for two of the modules I'm teaching this year. And write-up the module handbooks, essay questions, and introductory lectures. Need to gather some original sources and exerpts to put in the classbook and get it sent to the printers. Need to finish the data entry from the 19th century general regimental courts martial register I'm working on, so I can do the statistical analysis - so that i can get to work on the next chapter. I'm weeks behind. On the plus side though, I made a decent amount of cash picking up bags in fab and my toon is now a pretty good diver...
I am working from home today, the weather is pleasant despite the facts its winter. I live in Johannesburg and its 19 degrees Celsius today. People are complaining because its "cold "
I can see it now... "Whilst in the civilian sphere, justice could best be characterised by the centrality of discretion, within the military justice system discretion took second place to fapping."
